The madrasa is one of the buildings enclosing Registan Square in Samarqand, the others being the Ulugh Bey madrasa and Shir Dor madrasa. It only served as a madrasa, but is also the city`s Friday mosque. In contrast to the Timurid buildings, with their tile cladding that covered the walls completely, this building displays a combination of decorative brick bonds and ornamental tile areas. It owes its The One Made of Gold to its interior furnishings.
